"Built to Last" is the title track to the Dead's 1989 studio album. The song debuted on October 20. 1988 at The Summit, in Houston, Texas, and was only played 18 times total (once in 1988, once in 1990, and 16 times in 1989). "Built to Last" was dropped from the repertoire after Brent Mydland's passing.

Jerry Garcia had this to say about the song in an interview in 1989:

"The song is a great piece of ambiguity from Hunter. He's very good at being able to make something sound like it almost says something. The song almost says something and it has places that are clearer than others. It's my favorite kind of song. You listen to it, but you don't know what it's about. The more you listen, the less you know."
